Se cerró el primer día de pruebas de la fecha de IndyCar en el callejero de Detroit, y Kyle Kirkwood consiguió ser el más rápido con el auto de Andretti Global, a bordo del cual marcó 1m01s7509 y superó a los pilotos de Team Penske, Scott McLaughlin (a 0s2792), Will Power (a 0s6353) y Josef Newgarden (a 0s7310).
Con respecto a Power, fue quien protagonizó una controvertida maniobra cuando intentó retirar a Kirkwood de su camino, empujándolo varios metros para superarlo, ante la atónita reacción de su rival. «Pensé: ‘Bueno, ahora puedo abrirme un hueco’, así que lo empujé para que pasara el coche que iba delante«, declaró el piloto de Team Penske.

Christian Lundgaard (Arrow McLaren) fue el quinto a 0s8538, seguido por Colton Herta (Andretti Global), Pato O’Ward (Arrow McLaren), Louis Foster (Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing) y Rinus VeeKay (Dale Coyne Racing), quien cerró la brecha de un segundo de diferencia con el más rápido. En tanto, los coches de Juncos – Hollinger Racing, se ubicaron 23° con Sting Ray Robb y 27° con Conor Daly.
